A baby shower is one of the nicest ways for new parents to acquire the items that they need to have a smooth start to parenthood. It allows family and friends to show the mom-to-be how much love and support she has. You can also have a strategic meeting with the father-to-be and the closest friends and family of the mom before the party, in order to make up a helping hands calendar.
Things you can help out with could include cleaning house so mom can come home from the hospital to washed dishes and folded laundry, scheduling transportation for the older child’s activties, and offering to come along to do errands. The calendar can be revealed to the mom-to-be at the shower, along with all the names and phone numbers of the volunteers. It may be that both mom and the baby in fact don’t need anything new. You can choose to commemorate the upcoming event with a simple party with her friends and family.
You may want to ask the guests to bring baby items for donation to a women’s charitable organization. You might also ask everyone to bring small portions of prepared food that can be frozen or stored (this is known as a “freezer party”). This will definitely help out mom in the last days before her due date and also those following the birth. It is important to hold this shower quite close to the due date, of course, and to be sure that the mom has enough freezer or storage space to make it work.
Lastly, if the new baby is what is often known as a caboose baby (several years younger than the next brother or sister), you can still hold a full baby shower. A lot of moms and dads won’t likely have even the big items (cribs, etc.), anymore, or they could be outdated in terms of safety requirements.
Even if the baby shower is small or minor in terms of gift-giving, the most important thing to remember is that it is an opportunity to show the mom-to-be your love for her and her little one.
