Los Angeles County in California, the county where I live, is rationing water. Fortunately, I live in a small condominium on a street with multiple condominiums minus big lawns and numerous swimming pools. Our drought is getting bad and it’s only the beginning of summer. The wildfire season hasn’t even begun and that threat is one of the reasons we have to conserve.
Were getting notices, rules and fines handed out by the “water police” if they see water abuse. Lawns glisten on Monday and Thursday mornings only when the sprinklers get to be turned on for twenty minutes. Every household is being implored to turn their water off while brushing teeth and to collect water and use it carefully when preparing food, doing the dishes or cleaning the house. Sound crazy? It’s all true.
As a result of water shortages worldwide, salt water is even becoming a viable option for consumption. And with potable water becoming scarcer, its value could well compete with oil.
Everyday the need for water by every person grows as the number of people on our planet increases. But the quantity of water on our planet is finite. It doesn’t change. It is a case of making our potable drinking water stretch so every living being has enough to live. Though water resources are still considered to be sufficient, the question is are they located where all people can get to them. The total amount of water on the earth and in the atmosphere combined is approximately 1.3 to 1.4 billion km, it sounds like a lot, but it is not enough to use unwisely. Usable water makes up only two-thirds of 1% of the total water on the planet. Lakes in Africa are drying up. Lake Chad, once one of Africa’s third largest, is destined for extinction and with it is going the livelihood of the people who depend on it.
The future of water is grave. Our efforts toward preserving it are critical.
The significance of water’s importance to our lives is apparent when looking at the Enagic corporate office on any day of the week. People drive miles and miles spending hours in traffic and paying large amounts of money on gas to take home one free gallon of water. And they this day after day often for 30 days at a stretch.
Politically speaking, we must treat our planet with respect and reverence. If we don’t, coming generations will be deprived of a precious and necessary resource that in the coming years will become more valuable than gold or oil. Life without water will be non-existent.
